Gardening Tips

Our friendly team of knowledgeable staff is ready to help answer all your gardening questions. In the meantime, check out some handy gardening tips and answers to commonly asked questions.

The Best Time to Plant Summer Annuals

When planting annuals outdoors, you want to be mindful of the last frost date.  In our area, that is typically around the end of April.  We generally recommend waiting to plant most summer annuals until Mother’s Day, which is celebrated the second Sunday in May each year.  By this time, the risk of frost is much lower and your annuals have a better chance of survival.

Some popular summer annuals in our area include petunias, marigolds, lantana, angelonia, begonias, impatiens, dusty miller, and many more!  There are plenty of varieties that are well-suited for sun, shade, or a mix of both.

Planting Perennials

Spring and fall are the best time to plant perennials. When planting in the spring, be sure to do so after the last frost date. When planting in the fall, be sure to plant at least six weeks before the first frost date to help your plant have enough time to establish roots before winter weather arrives. Avoid planting perennials in the summer, as extreme heat and drought can make it harder for new plants to thrive and become well established.

Our friendly staff are happy to answer your questions and direct you to options that will work best for your sun exposure, soil conditions, and more.

Are your mums “hardy”?

Mums, a fall favorite for many, are semi-hardy. For the best chance of successful overwintering, it is best to plant them in the ground 60 days prior to the last frost date and in 60° soil temperatures. That will give your mums a great head start at establishing their root systems before the harsh winter weather arrives. Be sure to plant them in well-drained soil and full sun.

If you don’t plan to plant your mums in the ground and simply want to enjoy them for decoration on the porch or patio, you can expect about 4 weeks of bloom time.
